This is the seventh and final edition of the successful series in which we give famous ancient coins a new, modern look.
This time we’re going to Delphi. This was an important ancient cult site in Greece, dedicated to the god Apollo. Delphi is particularly famous for its renowned oracle. In the Temple of Apollo, a priestess delivered prophecies, to which people from all over the Greek world came seeking advice on political or personal matters. Delphi was considered a religious center and was regarded by the Greeks as the “navel of the world.”
The image shows a ram’s head. In ancient Greece, this symbol primarily represented strength, self-sacrifice, divine protection, and fertility. The ram was also a common sacrificial animal in religious rituals. A ram sacrifice was considered particularly valuable and was often offered to important gods. Rams were also frequently found on rhytons. A rhyton (from the Greek rhýein, meaning “to flow”) is an ancient, conical drinking vessel, very often in the shape of an animal’s head.
The surface is finished with a patina that makes even the finest details of the embossing stand out more vividly.
