Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA, is a famous monument in the Black Hills.
State historian and lawyer Doane Robinson, considered the father of Mount Rushmore, had the idea to have a huge monument carved out of stone so that the state of South Dakota would finally become known and attract tourists.
The faces of four US presidents are depicted on the rock: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Each president represents an important period or a key achievement in the history of the United States – from its founding through expansion and preservation to modernization.
It took 14 years (1927-1941) for more than 400 workers to complete the monumental memorial in its current form. To this day, it remains the world’s largest work of art carved in stone and attracts approximately three million visitors annually.
The half-ounce coin pays tribute to this work of art in a very special and modern way. It depicts the monument more in the form of a watercolor painting. The gradient of colors gives the impression that the artist has just finished the work. This impression is further enhanced by the paper-like appearance in the background.
