The second silver coin of the Czech Mint from the new series called the “Human Body” is dedicated to the sensory system – specifically the eye.
The senses represent the body’s ability to receive information from the environment. Humans have sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch; but, in addition to these, we also have a number of other receptors that allow us, for example, to perceive movement. We use most of our senses without realizing it. Most of the information we consciously process is obtained with the help of sight. Photoreceptors in the human eye send signals to the brain about the slightest amount of light. Each eye is made up of about 130 million rods needed for black and white vision and 7 million cones that enable color vision, and we can distinguish up to 10 million different colors.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Jan Štekel, DiS, bears a colored cross-section of the human eye. The composition is completed by the Latin inscription OCULUS (eye). On the obverse side, which is common to the entire series, a double-helix DNA is present.
