The first silver coin of the Czech Mint from the new series entitled, “Human Body,” is dedicated to the muscular system – specifically the muscles of the head.
The musculoskeletal system enables an organism to move actively in the surrounding environment. Its subsystem is the muscular system, which ensures the controlled production of mechanical energy. Some muscles can be controlled by will, others do their work automatically. Muscles can contract and are responsible for walking, digestive tract movements and heartbeat. The human body contains over 600 of them. There are 43 muscles in the face, but the number varies from person to person and many are missing in some people. Facial expression is one of the most important means of non-verbal communication. Using the face, a person can express 21 different emotions, each using a different combination of facial muscles.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Jan Štekel, DiS, bears a cross-section of a human face. The exposed skin gives prominence to the intertwining muscles, which are colored for a contrasting effect. The composition is supplemented with the Latin inscription MUSCULI CAPITIS (head muscles). On the obverse side, which is common to all 12 releases in the series, is a double helix of DNA.
