This is the start of a series on historical enemies. The first issue depicts the famous rivalry between Caesar and Brutus. This was not only a political conflict, but also a personal tragedy. Brutus’s actions exemplify the conflict between loyalty to a person and loyalty to principles.
The Caesar vs. Brutus – Blades of Liberty & Betrayal coin honors one of the most famous turning points in world history: March 15 BC, the “Ides of March.” This day symbolizes Caesar’s assassination and the inextricable connection between freedom, betrayal, and power. The duality of these events is depicted in a captivating design, with the coin capturing both the heroic and tragic moments.
The obverse and reverse of the coin are set in a tense dialogue that reflects the controversial interpretation of the events:
Brutus appears in the toga of a Roman senator, dressed in dignity but also in guilt. The richly detailed relief emphasizes his serious expression, which reflects the moral weight of his decision. The grayscale finish gives the figure depth and dramatic shadows, making him appear both a hero of the Republic and a symbol of treason. Brutus is surrounded by subtly engraved, net-like lines that symbolize the intrigues and power games that made Caesar’s murder possible. Twenty-three notches protrude from the edge—a detail that represents the 23 dagger thrusts used to kill Caesar. The notches are crisscrossed by fine relief lines that resemble a spider’s web, illustrating the web of betrayal and power struggles. The edge is also fluted, providing a special tactile quality that emphasizes the poignancy and violence of the moment.
The dagger, as a central design element, represents not only the deed, but also the separation between the two men. The polished blade with its gleaming contours forms a stylistic highlight of the coin. Its sharp point is accentuated by the broad proof line along the edge, placing the dagger at the center as a deadly symbol.
On the other side of the coin, Caesar sits enthroned on horseback in military armor. The partially polished surface highlights details like his armor, lending him an almost supernatural presence. Yet here, too, the design is multifaceted: His proud stance contrasts with the tragedy of his impending fate.
Caesar X Brutus – Blades of Liberty & Betrayal is a collector’s item of historical and symbolic depth. Thanks to the smartminting® technique, it combines masterful minting techniques with a dramatic narrative of freedom, power, and betrayal.
