The sixth issue in the “Prehistoric Life II” series from the Congo is dedicated to the Velociraptor. The colored motive of the coin struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver depicts a velociraptor hunting small prey, with another velociraptor in the background against a primeval mountain range. Above the scene, the inscriptions “PREHISTORIC LIFE”, “VELOCIRAPTOR MONGOLIENSIS”, “75 – 71 MIO YEARS BC”, and the year of issue 2025 are displayed. The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with the coin’s weight, fineness, and denomination.

The velociraptor was a small, bipedal predatory dinosaur that lived in what is now Mongolia during the late Cretaceous period. It belonged to the dromaeosaurid group and was about two meters long, with a characteristic sickle-shaped claw on its feet, which was probably used to hold and injure prey. Fossil finds show that it had feathers, which links it closely to the ancestors of today’s birds.
