Today’s “Kruzenshtern” was launched on June 24, 1926, under the name “Padua.” It was the last cargo sailing ship built by the F. Laeisz shipping company and belongs to the well-known Flying P-Liner class.  The four-masted steel barque was originally designed without an auxiliary engine and is still one of the largest active tall sailing ships in the world today.

In 1938/39, the “Padua” held the world record as the fastest square-rigged sailing ship.  In addition, it served as a film set several times in the 1930s and 1940s.

After World War II, the ship was handed over to the Soviet Union as war reparations, renamed “Kruzenshtern” in 1946, and thus given the name of the German-Baltic admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern.  Since then, it has been used as a renowned sailing training ship.
