The gilded silver coin celebrates the Australian Honey bee (Apis mellifera). Struck from five ounces of 99.9% silver in proof quality, the partially gold-plated design features a honeycomb, flowers and five bees. Inside the honeycomb is the inscription “HONEY BEE”. The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III as well as the weight, the fineness, the face value and the year of issue.
The honeybee, scientifically known as Apis mellifera, is one of the best known and most widespread bee species in the world. It plays a crucial role in the pollination of crops and wild plants and thus makes a significant contribution to maintaining biodiversity and securing food production. Despite their important role, honey bees are under threat worldwide. Factors such as the use of pesticides, the loss of habitats, diseases and parasites such as the Varroa mite are severely affecting bee populations. The protection and promotion of honey bees is therefore of the utmost importance for the maintenance of our ecosystem and our food security. Before the honey bee was introduced from Europe in 1822, there were no native honey bees in Australia for commercial use. Some 2,000 species of bees are now native to the red continent and have pollinated a large proportion of crops there, supporting Australia’s horticultural and agricultural industries and creating jobs. The 5-ounce gilded Honey Bee silver coin is limited to only 400 pieces and is delivered in the original wooden box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
