Petra is a world-famous archaeological site in southern Jordan, renowned for its rock-carved architecture and historical significance. Its name derives from the Greek word “Petros,” meaning rock. Often called the “Pink City” due to the color of its sandstone, it welcomes visitors with a magical stillness and monumental beauty.
The city, which at its peak was home to up to 30,000 people, was founded around the 4th century BC by the Nabataean Bedouin tribe and was an important trading center. The 40-meter-high Treasury “Al-Khazneh,” often considered the symbol of Petra, is particularly famous.
Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and was chosen as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” in 2007. Visitors appreciate the impressive rock faces, narrow gorges, and mystical atmosphere. The site is hidden among sandstone mountains and is only accessible on foot.
What makes this coin so special? A real eye-catcher is the open rim, which allows for a striking depiction of the unique architectural form of the building, carved in stone 2000 years ago. Upon closer inspection, one can see how realistically the sandstone and its surface are represented by the partial antique finish.
This extraordinary coin features multiple layers. Thanks to smartminting® technology, the building appears to emerge from the rock face, just as it does in real life. It’s essentially an ultra-high relief with a sense of depth. The coloring is also unique, and the hue created by sunlight has been extremely accurately reproduced. The artwork is completed by the reverse side, which, in addition to the coat of arms, depicts a wavy, Arabic-style carpet.
The 5-ounce silver coin is a unique combination of minting artistry and history, limited to only 500 pieces worldwide.
